What are back links?
There are hundreds of articles online about back links and their importance in regard to article marketing and SEO so I decided to impart my knowledge of back links to the world. This Hubpage will explain what back links are in a very easy to understand way.
A back link is a piece of html code that links back to your webpage. The back link will most commonly be a piece of text that is underlined and in a blue font. The link will be clickable and will lead the person who clicks it back to their site.
Let us take this Hubpage for example the following text will be a back link that will lead to another Hubpage that I have published:
Like I said the text is blue and underlined and can be clicked on. If we were to look at the code that makes up this back link it would look like this:

If clicked on this link would take the person who clicks it to my Gel candle Hubpage. This is more commonly known as a hyperlink.
Why are back links important?
An easy way of explaining the importance of back links is this think of each back link as a big arrow that is pointing people towards your webpage. The greater the number of back links that you have the easier it is for your webpage to be found. As well as making it easier for people who are surfing the web to find your page it also helps to improve the rank of your webpage.
Google and other search engines appear to take into account the number of back links a page has when indexing a webpage. A simplistic view of this would be that the higher the number of back links a page has the closer to page one that page gets.
Anyone who wants to get lots of traffic to their page needs to get their page onto the first page of Google and back links help to boost a pages rank. Google uses search spiders to find WebPages to index. These search spiders will scan through a webpage and will follow any links that are on that page, then they will follow the links that are on that page and then the ones on that page etc.
There are two types of back links there are do-follow and no-follow links. With a do-follow link a search spider will follow that link to the page it goes to. If the link is a no-follow link then the web crawler will not follow the link but will report back to the Search engine that the link is no-follow. A no-follow link is just a link that a search spider will not follow, but the link will still be clickable for anyone who reads that page.
Back links have their own scores as well. The more trusted the website that contains the link the better ranked that back link will be. For example 100 back links on sites that are ranked PR 1 would be less valuable than 100 back links on sites that are PR 10. So it is better to spend your time placing back links on higher ranked web pages.

Basically back links help people to find your site. They help get your site on to the front page of Google and they help to bring more traffic to your site.
